Sustainability Engagement Survey
The Zoo seeks to foster a culture of sustainability. To gauge the health and development of this culture, the Zoo has conducted a Sustainability Engagement Survey since 2012. The survey combines metrics on knowledge and perceived behavior to determine a single score between 0-100.
Gorillas on the Line
This annual sustainability effort combines conservation and recycling, asking both staff and guests to drop off unwanted, broken, small electronic items at the Zoo. This recycling effort raises money for Gorilla SAFE, helps curb the mining of precious metals from gorilla habitats, and increases the Zoo’s diversion rate!
Green Fund
With support garnered from the Green Fund, the Zoo has made significant strides in sustainability and staff engagement. Over the years, different exhibits throughout the Zoo have converted overhead lighting to energy-efficient LEDs, reducing the energy consumption from lighting substantially. The Green Fund has also sponsored zero-waste events, which diverted waste from landfills and educated guests on sustainable practices. With this year’s funds, employees are participating in NNOCCI training, empowering employees to better communicate climate change and environmental stewardship, both internally and with the community.
